The Corinthian Villa is designed in Baroque style, taking it's influences from Borromini and late Roman work. The Temple of Clitumnus, Constantine's Baptistery and San Carlo Quattro Fontane are three of the main influences.
The front facade is set out on three curves; the outer two are concave and the central one is convex. This, with its spirally fluted columns and false perspective central door and window create an exciting play of shadows which gives the villa its theatrical quality so typical of the Baroque. The serpentine (triple curved) facade which was occasionally used in 17th century Italy and Central Europe is here used for the first time in the history of English architecture. |
